About Buddha Dordenma in Thimphu

The Buddha Dordenma is located at the southern entrance to the Thimphu Valley in the Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park. The 51.5 m tall bronze statue is gilded in gold and is one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The Buddha Dordenma Statue houses 100,000 8-inch Buddha statues and 125,000 12-inch Buddha statues, effectively outnumbering the human population of Thimphu which sits at around 99,000. The Buddha Dordenma statue of Thimphu was built with an expense of almost $100 million in 2015 to commemorate the 60th birthday of the fourth king of Bhutan. The Shakyamuni Buddha statue is situated in the ruins of the Palace of Sherab Wangchuk, 13th Desi Druk of Bhutan. The meditation hall which forms the throne of the Buddha Dordenma also accommodates the name of sponsors and countries that helped in the construction of the statue.

The Buddha Dordenma Statue Bhutan, apart from adding to the significance of the site, also fulfils two prophecies. The first being Yogi Sonam Sangpo who foresaw a Buddhist statue that would ‘bestow blessings, peace, and happiness to the whole world’. The other was done by Guru Padmasambhava who also known as the second Buddha in the 8th century A.D. The construction of the statue began in 2006 with scheduled completion in 2010 but was delayed until 2015. The Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park that houses the statue was opened in 2011, and the 145 acres of the park was gifted to the monks of Bhutan.
