Zagreb Attractions

The largest, most modern city, as well as the capital of Croatia, Zagreb is fast on its way to becoming a popular tourist hub. It is much acclaimed by tourists as well as students of architectural studies for its 18th to 19th century Austro-Hungarian architecture, which gave the city its signature twin-spired Zagreb Cathedral.

Tourists on a Zagreb trip prefer to stay for a few days, conducting day tours to nearby locations as part of their Zagreb tourism itinerary before leaving for the next destination.

History of Zagreb

Zagreb has a rich cultural history, which can date all the way back to the Roman era, somewhere in the 9th century. The name Zagreb, however, was coined in the 11th century. The city changed hands several times after that, with each invasion leaving the city with some new cultural nuances, thereby affecting the very fabric of Zagreb.

The city is a small one, covering 30 km by 20 km overall. Despite its small size, the city has the best of both worlds, with a river and areas of low elevation marking one side and the foothills of the Medvednica Mountains marking other areas. Read on to find out more in this Zagreb guide.

Culture and Tourism

Zagreb is a major tourist hub for Croatia, with the number of tourists visiting here increasing with each passing year. It also helps that this city is the main transportation hub of the country. Tourists visiting other parts of the country have to pass through Zagreb, thereby giving the city a multi-cultural hue. There is a lot to see and do here, as one can see from this Zagreb travel guide, starting from partaking in visiting medieval churches and gothic monuments, as well as enjoying a stroll across the street market to take a look at the local way of life. The cuisine of Zagreb is a smorgasbord of various other European influences, so gastronomic are sure to find a little of everything here, with, of course, a Croatian twist.

There are also several activities to indulge in, as far as adventure goes. For instance, Lake Jarun is a good place to enjoy biking and skating, whereas the Zagreb 360 degree observation deck is a great spot to take in the entire skyline of the city at one go. Vehicles on rent are also available readily, for those planning self-driven tours. However, its most famous and most visited attraction remains the “Museum of Broken Relationships”, where jilted or broken-hearted lovers leave relics of their past relationships with sometimes darkly humorous quotes and synopses.

For travelers moving to other destinations from Zagreb, there are regular flights, trains, and buses to travel anywhere within Europe and most parts of the world.

Transportation

Commuting within the city is pretty easy, with funiculars, local buses, private taxis, and a very efficient tram system. Tourists can also make use of a Hop-On/Hop-off Bus Service that operates two lines for the most efficient way of sightseeing. However, true to its fame of being a “strollable city”, Zagreb is best explored on foot, strolling across piazzas and walking over to the markets. Visit Zagreb for a host of new experiences!

With more than a million visitors in a year, Zagreb tourism is well on its way to becoming a much sought after part of all Europe trips.

Moreover, being a transit hub, here you can find a plethora of flights for numerous destinations, including London, Paris, Zurich, Brussels, Dubrovnik, Naples, Vienna, and more. Though, there are no direct flights available for Indian cities, you can always cover the India to Zagreb distance of about 6304 km while booking connecting flights. You can choose from airlines, such as Croatia Airlines, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Air India, and more, and reach the capital of Croatia in about 12 hours to 40 hours depending upon the pick-up location.

By Train

Though, there is no direct connectivity between India and Zagreb via railways, you can choose to board a train to Zagreb Central Station from nearby European cities such as Munich, Vienna, Budapest, and Split. Though, the train route to Zagreb is not really extensive, the busiest one is plying between Zagreb and Split. Traveling via train may take about 5 hours 30 minutes, or more.

By Road

Again, there are numerous ways to reach this city from other European cities via roadways. But, if you are wondering how to reach Zagreb from India, you might be disappointed, for there is no direct road connectivity between the two places. To reach the Croatian capital, you may get on a bus from other nearby cities.
