About Daroji Bear Sanctuary in Hampi

Abode of the Indian Sloth Bears, the Daroji Sloth bear Sanctuary is located in Karnataka, just 20 kms away from the gorgeous ruins of Hampi. The open scrub forests, undulated hillocks, fallen boulders and sheltering caves of the sanctuary, spread over 83 square feet, are home to a large population of these honey-lovers, endemic to India.

The Government of Karnataka in October 1994 declared a part of Bilikallu Reserve Forest as the Daroji Bear Sanctuary to protect Sloth Bears, locally known as Karadi. Being nocturnal animals, sloth bears hunt for food including fruits, flowers, honey, insects and termites during the nights and rest during the day.

Apart from the 120 sloth bears, one can also find animals like tigers, leopards, star tortoise, 90 species of birds and 27 species of butterflies inside the Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, making their visit even more memorable. A watch tower located opposite to Karadi Kallu Gudda lets tourists enjoy spotting the sloth bears hiding, hunting and eating. Tourists can also cherish breathtaking views of the overall terrain. Overall, our recent trip was good, but we encountered a few issues that dampened the experience. Some of the places we planned to visit were closed due to the early monsoon, which was disappointing. Initially, our driver was quite rude, but after we filed a complaint, his behavior improved signific

antly, making the rest of our journey much smoother. Regarding our accommodations, the stays in Coorg and Mysore were absolutely awesome. The hospitality, comfort, and ambiance in these locations were top-notch. However, our experience at Kerala Porch.inn was less than satisfactory. The manager was very rude and uncooperative. There was no lift available, and our request for hot water was outrightly rejected. Additionally, the room locker keys were not functioning properly. We were locked out of our room for 30 minutes with our family, only to be informed later that we needed to update our locker key—something that was not communicated to us earlier. Despite these challenges, we made the best of our trip and created many wonderful memories. With a few improvements, this trip could have been perfect.
