About Bhairavnath Temple in Jammu
The Bhairavnath Temple in Jammu is a must visit stop on your pilgrimage tour, since legend has it that without completing a visit to this temple, the entire journey to Vaishno Devi will be considered futile. According to most mythological versions of how the temple was formed, Bhairavnath or Bhairo Nath was a most accomplished priest, who became enamored with Mata Vaishnavi, and started following her around. Unable to shake him off or deter him, she decided to retire to the mountains. However, Bhairavnath followed here there as well, and was at the receiving end of the Goddess’ ire. She cut off his head, which fell a few kms away. After death, Bhairavnath realised his mistake and pleaded for forgiveness. The Goddess couldn’t take back her fatal blow, so she ensured that a temple would come up exactly where Bhairavnath’s head fell, and also decreed that whoever wanted to visit Vaishno Devi would also have to visit Bhairavnath Temple, otherwise the journey would not be considered complete.
Back when the routes were not paved or well-maintained, getting to Bhairavnath Temple was not an easy task due to the steep climb. These days there is a ropeway that operates from the Vaishno Devi Temple to the Bhairavnath Temple, making it very easy to reach the temple. The ropeway, known as Bhairon Ghati Passenger Ropeway, cuts down traveling time from 2 hours to 5 minutes.
