National Museum, Maldives

The very first museum of Maldives, National Museum was established in 1952 on the National Day of Maldives, to preserve and display the history of this minuscule island nation in the Indian Ocean. The museum exhibits a rather significant collection of historical artifacts and royal antiquities ranging from the Buddhist era to Muslim monarchs.

Attractions of National Museum of Maldives

This museum on the island of Malé is located in the Sultan Park, which was previously the site of the 17th-century Royal Palace of Maldives. The museum is currently administered by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture of Maldives. The old three-storied museum building is located in the Sultan Park in Malé. The newly renovated whitewashed building of the National Museum is also in Sultan Park. The interior of the new building retains the charm of the days of the Sultanate and the handwritten Quran is engraved on the walls.

The galleries at downstairs are devoted to the ancient and medieval chapters of Maldivian history. Collection on display here includes weaponry, religious paraphernalia, and carved pieces of wood which commemorate the conversion of the island to Islam in 1153. The upstairs gallery showcases the modern period including the lacquer-work boxes (for which the Maldives is known for), the country’s first gramophone, and a massive computer. There is also an impressive marine collection including the 6-meter-long skeleton of the Longman’s Beaked Whale.

For travelers in the Maldives, the National Museum is worth spending a few hours perusing its eclectic contents that contain ceremonial thrones, palanquins, rifles, and priceless items excavated from the temple dating back to the country’s pre-Islamic days. In an attack by some religious extremists in February 2012, a six-faced coral statue and an 18-inch bust of Buddha along with some coral statues were severely damaged. However, the remaining collections of the National Museum Maldives offer an insight into the wealth of the island’s history.

Anshuman's 5 days trip to Maldives

We enjoyed the family trip to Maldives and it was as relaxing as expected. For us the challenge was to keep our child engaged while enjoying the serene beauty of beaches and water villa. OBLU Xperience is such property where you can find the activities for all be it adult or children. The stay at either beach villa or water villa is out of expectations. How can I forgot the lunch date @underwater restaurant at Only BLU underwater restaurant...!!! Thanks to Footprint holiday and Sh. Naushad for suggesting the split of stay and arranging hassle free trip from arrival to departure, giving us the options to select from and suggesting the best option considering the family trip.

Bhavana's 5 days trip to Maldives

Our experience with travel triangle contact Naushad was very bad to say the least. Once the initial payment was complete, he was totally non responsive and unbelievably rude. Every single message on WhatsApp needed multiple followups for response. Very rarely call was picked up and answered on the first attempt. He was not only rude to me but to all the fellow ladies who were travelling with me. He even went to the extent of rudely asking if it was the first time we were travelling abroad. I am an IT professional travelling abroad to UK, US etc multiple times for work. I have travelled to places like Italy and Thailand through travel agents for vacation. I have never ever had such a bad experience. The worst experience was the itinerary said all the entry tickets were covered only to realise that we had to pay for every single place in srilanka. When asked we were told it was a typo and had to be considered under exclusion. But once we reached srilanka, our guide Sameer changed the whole perspective for us. He was not only very respectful, but also patient throughout our 6 day trip. He showed us all the important places and took photos. Driver was very good and capable and we were very happy with our experience in srilanka. No
