History Of Rijksmuseum

The beautiful building of the museum was designed by Pierre Cuypers, and it opened in 1885. The idea to open a French National Museum was put forward by Isaac Gogel after the birth of the Batavian Republic. The museum was opened under the name ‘NationaleKunstgalerji’ with around 200 paintings and objects. In its initial years, Gogel and its first director, C.S. Roos made numerous acquisitions.

The Rijksmuseum is basically known for its distinctive art pieces and historical objects from the Dutch Golden Age. Visitors can now experience a sense of beauty and time by admiring these artworks from renowned artists. The Rijksmuseum masterpieces are Rembrandt Van Rijn’s iconic ‘Night Watch’ painting and Johannes Vermeer’s ‘The Milkmaid’ painting. Also, in the Gallery of Honour, works of great masters like Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and Vermeer can be admired.

The museum has a dollhouse that has unique dolls dating back to 1676. Visitors can look at the gorgeous collection of Delft Blue pottery which includes exotic tea-sets and vases. The museum also has the biggest and oldest library. A major renovation has restored the library’s grandeur. In the Philips Wing of the museum, several exhibitions from around the globe are showcased. It also has a coffee shop tucked at the back of the wing.
