Best Time To Visit Johannesburg

Plan your trip during best season to experience the best of this stunning destination

Johannesburg is a city with a pleasant subtropical highland climate, thanks to its location on the Highveld Plateau, which means you can pay a visit to this lovely South African city at any time of the year. But if one must be specific, the winter months from May to September is perfect with dry and sunny mornings and cool nights. Located in the southern hemisphere, Johannesburg and the rest of South Africa experience the seasons as opposed to its North African counterparts. If you are coming from India, or any other country from the northern hemisphere, expect to find the polar kind of Johannesburg climate than your place. The best time to visit Johannesburg is from March to May and from September to November.

Johannesburg during March-May

March to May is the autumn season in Johannesburg, which means the airfares and hotel prices drop after a busy summer, and makes space for a visiting the city in a budget. Since Johannesburg has a reasonable climate all year long, there will be no problem with the attractions or activities. The only thing you will need to do is to pack a couple of woollens, as Johannesburg gets ready for a long and dry winter. Considering the weather and slashed prices together, this is the best time to travel to Johannesburg.

Johannesburg during June-August

Weather in Johannesburg in June is dry and chilly, and for those who love to travel in this type of wintry climate will absolutely love it. During the daytime, the temperature stays around 10°-15°C and can go down to 4°-5°C at night, but none of it will be unbearable. Moreover, you will get little to no precipitation or humidity at all. Jo’burg winters are very dry, and instead of umbrellas and raincoats, carry warm clothes and denser body lotions to keep your skin from cracking.

Johannesburg during September-November

From September to November, Johannesburg experiences a lovely spring with ideal temperatures. Johannesburg weather in September is when you still get the lingering leftover chill from winter, but the humidity of summer and the sudden torrential rains have not started yet, which makes the Johannesburg weather of this time perfect for a visit. The prices are not as low as autumn, but it is still very much pocket-friendly during this time.

Johannesburg during December-February

This is when Johannesburg sees the most crowd as summer time is busiest in any tourist destination. With all the schools off and summer holidays going on, the streets and attractions of Johannesburg are packed with tourists. You can certainly visit the place, as the temperature will be quite pleasant ranging from the 20s to 30s (°C). The cons are long queues almost everywhere and sudden heavy showers, making long stays outdoor a bit difficult. The temperature in Johannesburg from November to February is the hottest.

S's 5 days trip to Johannesburg

The team at TravelLykke have been very professional in their approach right through. They have been very patient and understanding of the requirements and accommodative to all kinds of doubts and queries and options too. Fairly transparent in the dealings and have a good set of on-ground contacts in S Africa who too have been professional and on time without delays and exceptions. A suggestion: there were some legs where we were informed we need to take Uber (to & fro Robben Island & Table Top Mountain). For the kind of spends done by us (Rs 3 Lakhs +) overall, it would have been helpful if these too could have been accommodated in the package. It is the nuisance value of having to book, wait etc. Also more minute detailing of the Full day Cape Peninsula tour could have been share earlier - we got it on landing from the local guide and it was very educative. Why not share this ahead of time? Some travel agencies give a backpack or travel kit (the amount of Rs 3 Lakhs is HUGE) with your branding. In this case it is singularly absent. Wonder why? We stayed in 3 hotels - Emerald Guest house in Johannesburg (Rating Poor to Good only); Kruger Park Adventure Lodge ( Excellent); Holiday Inn Express at Cape Town (Excellent).

Mayankmaki's 9 days trip to Johannesburg

The trip was very well organised and all our requirements were met. We had issues due to flight delays and we were late for one tour, our travel planner Mrs Prerna was very helpful and proactive to adjust the tours to accommodate everything. From last minute hotel booking to providing rental car , she was quick to respond and also regular reminders before trips to ensure smooth communication between us and South African operators. Would surely recommend their services The views with clouds sliding in all around the mountains and ocean at the cape point during the cape peninsula tour.

Aniruddha's 9 days trip to Johannesburg

We had an amazing trip to South Africa. It is a beautiful country to visit with very hospitable people around. Everything went well without any hiccups. The hotels, cab drivers and other details were well planned by Nikhil from Besten/MK Holidays, special thanks to him. Some elements which can be improved were the visits planned during our stay at Knysna as they were quite some distance away from our hotel. Will definitely recommend Travel Triangle to others for planning their trips.
