About Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg

Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg is one of the largest public areas and retail complex, not only in Johannesburg or South Africa, but in the entire continent of Africa. The square is a popular gathering space in the city for casual evening strolls, coffee shop meet-ups or window shopping. There are a host of options for tourists to explore. Whether you are here on an informational tour or just a leisure tour, there are lots of things to do here. As it is in the heart of the city, it is easily accessible from most parts of the city. It is usually best enjoyed with a group of friends or like-minded people who share the same interest.

History of Nelson Mandela Square

Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg or the Square as it is simply called had a different name to begin with. It was Sandton Square when it was opened in 1994. In 2004, it was renamed after the Father of the Nation, Nelson Mandela. There were protests against naming the square after Mandela, as the man had long stood against the undue advantages of the privileged class, and the square stands in one of the most opulent locations of the city. Together with the Sandton City market centre, Nelson Mandela Square in South Africa is the largest shopping hub in Africa.

Shopping in Nelson Mandela Square

The Nelson Mandela Square Market stretches for around 1000 square metres and houses more than 400 stores, coffee shops, restaurants and a library. The Nelson Mandela Square shops range from local boutiques to international brands, offering the visitors the most eclectic shopping experience. Other than that, there are weekly and monthly Nelson Mandela Square events, functions and fairs to attend. Do visit if you can the monthly antique and collectibles fair. Around 40-50 top sellers participate in the event on the first Sunday of every month except January for the past 28 years, and it would be quite a historic event to witness. While you are there, do visit the 6 metres or 19ft high Nelson Mandela Square statue that was unveiled at the same time the market got its new name, after the same person.

Things to Do at Nelson Mandela Square

Artisanal Market - in the artisanal market, you can enjoy a small fair where homemade products are made by local artisans. The market is famous for themes such as “the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker”. It is one of the best places to shop for decorative home items and tailor-made outfits.

Antique Collection Fair - a heaven for shopaholic, Antique Collection fair is one of the liveliest places to visit near Nelson Mandela Square. Get your hands on some of the finest collections of artefacts.

Peacemakers Museum - this museum is a tribute to the prolonged struggles of freedom fighters in South Africa. The sturggle and eventual fight against discrimination of the black and similar significant events are displayed in the museum through pictures and writings.

S's 5 days trip to Johannesburg

The team at TravelLykke have been very professional in their approach right through. They have been very patient and understanding of the requirements and accommodative to all kinds of doubts and queries and options too. Fairly transparent in the dealings and have a good set of on-ground contacts in S Africa who too have been professional and on time without delays and exceptions. A suggestion: there were some legs where we were informed we need to take Uber (to & fro Robben Island & Table Top Mountain). For the kind of spends done by us (Rs 3 Lakhs +) overall, it would have been helpful if these too could have been accommodated in the package. It is the nuisance value of having to book, wait etc. Also more minute detailing of the Full day Cape Peninsula tour could have been share earlier - we got it on landing from the local guide and it was very educative. Why not share this ahead of time? Some travel agencies give a backpack or travel kit (the amount of Rs 3 Lakhs is HUGE) with your branding. In this case it is singularly absent. Wonder why? We stayed in 3 hotels - Emerald Guest house in Johannesburg (Rating Poor to Good only); Kruger Park Adventure Lodge ( Excellent); Holiday Inn Express at Cape Town (Excellent).

Mayankmaki's 9 days trip to Johannesburg

The trip was very well organised and all our requirements were met. We had issues due to flight delays and we were late for one tour, our travel planner Mrs Prerna was very helpful and proactive to adjust the tours to accommodate everything. From last minute hotel booking to providing rental car , she was quick to respond and also regular reminders before trips to ensure smooth communication between us and South African operators. Would surely recommend their services The views with clouds sliding in all around the mountains and ocean at the cape point during the cape peninsula tour.

Aniruddha's 9 days trip to Johannesburg

We had an amazing trip to South Africa. It is a beautiful country to visit with very hospitable people around. Everything went well without any hiccups. The hotels, cab drivers and other details were well planned by Nikhil from Besten/MK Holidays, special thanks to him. Some elements which can be improved were the visits planned during our stay at Knysna as they were quite some distance away from our hotel. Will definitely recommend Travel Triangle to others for planning their trips.
