About Barren Island In Andaman

Barren Island is located in Andaman and is home to the only active volcano in South Asia. As the name suggests, the island is devoid of human life and is inhabited only by rats, goats, flying foxes, and bats. The Island is around 139 kilometers from Port Blair, Andaman. The Island is around three kilometers wide and has two kilometers wide caldera.

History of Volcano Eruptions

The first volcano eruption as per historical record was in the year 1787. Again in the year 1991 and 1994, the volcano erupted and smoke continued for months. Since then, Barren Island has seen many eruptions once or twice almost every year. The latest eruption was recorded in the year 2018.

About Barren Island?

If one wants to reach the Island, permission from the Forest Department of Andaman must be taken. The Island can only be explored by ferries and seaplanes. No one is allowed even near to the shore of Barren Island. From Havelock Island, it takes about 4 to 5 hours to reach Barren Island. One gets to see the captivating view of the Island and the active volcano from the ferry. One can also book a private seaplane and get an aerial view of the active volcano. Barren Island is a famous place for scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing. Many experienced divers come to the island to explore the untouched and pristine underwater world, after taking permission from the Forest Department. For a clearer vision of the volcano, it is suggested to visit Barren Island from November to February.

Other Famous Volcanos in Andaman and Nicobar

Another volcanic island in Andaman and Nicobar is Narcondam Island, which is classified as a dormant volcano by the Geological Survey of India. Narcondam Island is under UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Another island famous for a volcanic eruption is Baratang Island for mud volcanoes.

    of June. Trusting them we planned our tour, and it was a great experience - starting from Rohan at TT and Shivani from Pearl Andaman - they had been very courteous, helpful and patient. They meticulously planned our travel, taking care of all our needs, booking right hotels and right rooms to accommodate my family. The cab and its drivers were amazing as well - knowledgeable about the place and talked about its history - so were the tour coordinators of both Swaraj and Saheed Dweep. The water activities they suggested and where to do those saved a lot of money as well. I almost missed to mention the ferry services - they booked the best in business for us. :) Big thumps for both TT team and Pearl Andaman team - Thank you so much for everything

    The trip was organised well but initially we had to keep following up for our trip details, the local travel agent did not connect once we landed. But after that it was a smooth ride all through. There was some miscommunication later on our itinerary, all this was upsetting but it was sorted. Most o
    f the things we asked for during the trip was promptly resolved. Even for the cancelled elephanta trip we were informed that the refund of the boat tickets will be done soon. The hotel rooms had some issues like no handwash at both the hotels, damaged electric kettle at Havelock beach resort and in one room the geyser and the hair dryer was not working. But overall it was a well organised trip.
