About Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary In Bali

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary also goes with the name Ubud Monkey Forest. It is located at the village of Padangtegal, and the locals of the village consider this forest the spiritual nerve-center for their beliefs. The forest is the home to the Balinese grey long-tailed macaques that are scientifically known as Macaca fascicularis. Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary has over 600 monkeys spread into six different regions (main temple area, new forest area, north-east area, east part of the main temple, cremation temple and central point). You are to be welcomed by the monkeys right from the entrance of the forest. If you wish to interact with the monkeys, just feed them with bananas. They won't do any harm. However, refrain from touching them. Lazing around the forest, swinging through the canopy, admiring the natural habitat of monkeys, capturing photographs, walking through the nutmeg forests are something that you do to prepare yourself to do.

Highlights of Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

The forest is the home ground to three temples named as Prajapati Temple, Dalem Agung Padangtegal Temple, and Holy Spring Temple. Prajapati Temple is situated at the Northeastern part of the park. There is also a cemetery adjacent to the temple which is the temporary burial ground of the deceased until the mass cremation ceremony which is held every five years. The Holy Spring temple is on the north-western side of the forest and holds spiritual importance. One could take a bath here for physical cleansing in order to retain purification. The Dalem Agung Padangtegal is the worshipping ground of Lord Shiva. These temples orchestrate an essential role within the local community. The monkeys are considered sacred because of its association with the mythologies.

As per the census of 2011, they are over 605 Macaques living in the forest. The monkeys are perfectly taken care of by the forest staff. They are fed sweet potatoes and bananas three times a day as their main source of food. Sometimes papayas, coconuts, corn, and other local foods are also given. The monkeys are very territorial as they are spread in many different regions of the forest. There might be cases that two different groups of monkeys indulge in a fight. They share every habit of being a mammal, therefore enabling the tourist to see their day to day activities such as grooming, nurturing young ones and also mating. The monkeys have no fear of humans and are smart enough to approach only those who offer food to them.

Overall trip was awesome except few things .We had not get breakfast during Nusa penida tour by mega boutique hotel even we informed them earlier at the evening and We stayed in kori maharani villa at ubud which was quite far from the city so no local market was there so it's my suggestion to travel agency to book hotel which is near to city so that traveller can easily access local markets by their own and special thanks to Mr. Ramiz from taking a break holidays for fulfilling all the commitments he had made with us and he was very polite and co-operative. Overall we enjoyed the trip. Nusa penida island and Aloha swing.

Traveller can be better guided about timings of reporting at places and how many things can be covered in a day keeping distance & customer comfort in mind. Nusa penida visit was not fully fulfilling since time was constraint even after overnight stay Merusaka hotel stay. Pool villa stay, beach club visit, etc

Department of Anthropology, University of Notre Dame, United State of America conducted 14-year long research on the monkeys declaring the species free of rabies. The monkeys residing in the forest are pretty much healthy and are monitored by the Primate Research Center of Udayana University
