About Katarmal Sun Temple in Almora

Drawing thousands of devotees from all around India, the Katarmal Sun Temple is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus. The temple is built in such a way that the first rays of the sun fall on the idol of Lord Burhadita, an ancient Sun God. The temple shows exemplary architectural beauty and is intermingled with impressive carvings on the wall. The worshippers of the Sun God flock to this temple as it is the second most important sun temple after the Konarak temple in Orissa. The atmosphere surrounding the temple is calm and soothing. For those who love trekking and are a nature lover, you can trek your way till the temple. The picturesque beauty around the temple will leave you spellbound.

The Katarmal Temple is located in close proximity to Almora, approximately 19 km from the main town.

Highlights

Constructed by a Katyuri King, Katramalla in the 9th century, the Katarmal Surya temple gets its name from the ruler who ordered its construction. It is a rare sun temple that is found amidst the hills. You can trek your way to the temple. It is a steep climb of about 2 km and is likely to provide utter satisfaction once you witness the majestic view from the hilltop. The Sun temple houses the deity Burhadita, the ancient Sun God. It also houses 45 other temples. The other temples have idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and many more. The architecture of the Katarmal Sun Temple, Almora depicts the style that was prevalent in that era and is bound to leave you enraptured. The temple was declared an important monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958.

All things were good in trip but only regret with Hotel room. It was too small compare than others hotels like you just enter and over. Bed is also too small to accommodate 3 persons (male, female and 2 yrs child) Ambience of resort and peacefulness.

Booked a trip for Uttarakhand (Nainital Ranikhet Almora Kausani) within a very short notice. Arrangements made by tripsailer.com was awesome. Everything went smooth starting from stays upto conveyance.. all the hotels were just fantastic with perfect hill view.. just didn't like the cottage at Ranik

het..its location was also not so good..far away from main city, though view was good but the hotel packed in service, maintenance and food. Stay in nainital was the best part, near the mall road with perfect lake and hill view..loved the place..
